Nebraska Child Identification Program better known as CHIP or C.H.I.P. provides parents with crucial personal information that they may provide legal authorities in case of a child becoming lost, abducted or worse. The best thing about the program is that it is provided free of charge to parents and their children through funding from the Masonic Lodges and donations of time and money from area law enforcement, health professionals and businesses. The five (5) different methods of identification: photo, video, DNA swab, dental impression and fingerprinting have been a part of Nebraska's CHIP program since its conception. The idea of collecting personal information is for it to be already in parents hands in case their child disappears so law enforcement officials can use it in a search. Parents receive an information sheet on how to properly care for the collected samples, including storing the DNA swab in the freezer to preserve it. "The only thing we keep is a permission slip saying it was OK for us to collect those samples".
